Welcome to Day 5 of Jessica Jones Month! Picture it: you’re a former superhero, you’re pregnant, and you have bills to pay. What are you going to do? If you’re Jessica Jones, then the answer’s simple: cover superheroic activity for the Daily Bugle newspaper.

In April of 2004, during the first issue of The Pulse, Daily Bugle owner J. Jonah Jameson wanted to connect with a wider range of readers who were more in tune with New York’s capes and tights crowd. To that end, he gathered a team of his best reporters, including Spider-Man ally Ben Urich, and made a special section of the paper dubbed ‘The Pulse’. Deciding that it needed a superhero’s perspective, Jameson sought retired crimefighter Jessica Jones to help consult and keep the section steady.

Jessica, facing the same problems I mentioned above, almost decided not to take the position, due to her fear of losing her child. However, because of her financial situation, she eventually accepted (although with the only condition being that she not partake in any dangerous activities).

Even then, the Pulse team goes through more adventures than any newspaper should. They successfully help take down the Green Goblin and have him sent to jail before having Jessica try to track down Luke Cage (as a tie in to the then recent Secret War story arc). In the end though, she quit the Bugle because of Jameson’s lack of respect for the newly announced Avengers team.

Since this series was released during the early 2000s, I think it’s a little safe to assume that Jessica’s newspaper days carried over to her depiction in the Ultimate Marvel universe, where she worked as a reporter for Midtown High School’s newspaper and television network.

What do you think about one of Jessica’s more colorful jobs? Let me know, either in the comments below or with a tweet through that widget on the left.
