Welcome back to Day 16 of Jessica Jones Month everyone! A while ago, I mentioned how the Purple Man in the show wouldn’t actually be purple; instead, his powers would cause his victim’s sight to be tinged purple. Yesterday, Netflix released a huge amount of photos from the highly anticipated Marvel show, including a (rather menacing) shot of the Purple Man in a hallway. You can check it out below:

Scary right? At first glance, you’d think he actually was purple, given the comic accurate shading on actor David Tennant’s skin and in his hair. At least, that’s what a number of commenters claimed after viewing the picture, creating elaborate fan theories about Tennant’s Purple Man wearing makeup to seem normal until a certain point in the show. However, there are a few things we can see that prove this is definitely from a victim’s influenced POV.

First, why is the rest of the environment purple? If the actor were actually portrayed as a purple man in this picture, then there’s no reason that the rest of the hallway has to look purple too. Second, pay attention to his clothes. They’re also tinged purple. Granted, the comic book version of the Purple Man had purple clothes on occasion too. But pay attention to the shading and light here. Purple Man’s suit is so dark to the point of looking blue, despite there being no legitimate reason for looking that way.

Finally, let’s look at that amazing trailer again. There are a couple of shots where Purple Man attempts to influence Jessica’s mind, giving the screen a dark purple shade. I’ve put a picture of one such shot here:

It’s a little dark, but do you notice any similarities? Such as how this shot and the one above are tinged purple? To me, this definitively proves Purple Man’s lack of purple pigments, giving the character an even eerier quality. Now, he actually can just up and disappear if a scheme doesn’t work out, as opposed to using his powers to make people forget he was ever there (and hoping he can get away fast enough before his pheromones wear off and his victims come after him).

Can you think of any other way of proving that Purple Man is/isn’t actually purple in the show? Let me know, either in the comments below or with a tweet through that widget on the left.
